Why Use a Dynaplug?

Plug Types

For smaller punctures, a standard, pointed tip Dynaplug can quickly seal the hole and get you back on the bike. For larger punctures, many Dynaplug tools come with a Megaplug – an extra-large plug with a rounded tip. For even bigger punctures, you can use multiple plugs in the same hole. At some point a puncture may be too big to plug (especially if it’s a gash) – at this point a tire boot and a tube are probably required.

How Does a Dynaplug Work?

A Permanent Fix

On 98% of all tubeless punctures, a Dynaplug can provide a permanent fix. No need to remove the plugs when you get home. Over time, the plug will bond with the tire and become stronger than ever.

Plug Tip

Covert Plug tips

The tip of the Dynaplug makes it easy to insert the plug into the tire. No need to ream or widen the hole first. Overtime, the tip may detach from the rubber part of the plug – this is okay as the viscoelastic-impregnated rubber will have already bonded with the tire.

Anecdotes

Out in the middle of Downieville, I launched off a root and landed in a rock garden - pinching my tire between the rocks and my rim. Creating 2 holes - one on the tread of the tire and one on the bead. With the Dynaplug Racer Pro I was able to throw 2 standard plugs in the bead and the mega plug & standard plug in the tread. Aired the tire up with a CO2 and was able to continue riding to the bottom of the mountain. Way better than walking for 8 miles!  – Jeffrey

While riding on a remote gravel road, a rock gashed a hole in my sidewall. I quickly got my Dynaplug tool out and was able to plug the puncture so quickly that the tire still had most of its air left. Took out my mini pump and added a few PSI to get back up to the right pressure and got back on the bike in less than a minute. Dynaplug is what makes tubeless worth it!  – Nick

Dynaplug vs. Bacon Strips

Bacon strips are the most common form of tubeless plug; however, there are some big drawbacks to using a bacon strip-style tool. Let’s compare them.

Bacon Strips

Tips and Tricks

Keep your Dynaplug close at hand

The quicker you can plug your tire, the quicker you will get back on the road. Keeping your Dynaplug in a pocket or easy to access bag will save you time when it comes to reinflating.

Carry a pump

Many riders are accustomed to using CO2 to quickly reinflate their tires; however, with a Dynaplug, you can often fix your tire with minimal air loss. In this situation, it can be useful to have a mini pump so that you don’t have to waste an entire canister of CO2 just to inflate a few PSI.

Take care when putting a tube in

When the worst-case scenario hits and a puncture is too big for even multiple plugs, you may have to use an inner tube. Before you put the tube in, remove any plugs in the tire. The pointed metal tips can easily puncture a tube. If the tire has older Dynaplugs, where the tip may have come off, check that there are no remaining shards of metal nestled in the rubber before installing a tube.

Our favorite tool

It’s no secret – our favorite tool at Performance Bicycle is the Dynaplug Racer Pro. It’s a simple tool with a sleek design – and it gets the job done. The carrying capacity of three standard plugs and one Megaplug is enough for nearly any ride. And the variety of color options adds a fun touch of personalization to the equation.

How many plugs do you need?

Most punctures can be fixed with just a single plug; however, bigger gashes may require more. When riding in remote locations or on longer tours, it is nice to have extra plugs just in case. Larger capacity tools like the Megapill allow you to carry up to 7 plugs – loaded and ready to go. Or you can still use a Racer Pro and carry an extra pack of plugs.

Extra Tools

Dynaplug tools

Some Dynaplug tools include extra features. The Pill and Megapill both include a Micro Knife that allows you to trim the excess material from the plugs after insertion (however, it’s not required to trim the plugs). The Pill includes an Air Stopper that can be used to stop air loss while you prep your plug. The Air tool includes a CO2 hose that can also be used with a Presta valve. And finally, all Dynaplug tools include a pipe cleaner that can be dipped in isopropyl to clean residue from the inside of Dynaplug insertion tubes.
