Shimano ST-EF500 Brake/Shift Levers (Black) (Right) (4 Finger) (7 Speed)
Do not expect to be able to switch out the cable. I have had the same problem with three different ones that are literally new. I wanted to switch to better cables. It is almost impossible to remove the two small phillips screws that hold down the cover. Out of six screws I only got two out using a screwdriver and they were destroyed in the process. The head is a #1 phillips and all of them have been over tightened at the factory. The shape of the head is a little off so as soon as you apply the slightest pressure in the counter clockwise direction it has no grip. Before making the bad decision of drilling the heads out on one of the shifters I tried turning the screws clockwise and you can apply pressure without the screwdriver camming out, so if I had wanted to tighten the screws I would have been fine. Do not drill the heads out. If you drill the heads out there is literally no screw sticking up after you’re finished so your not going to be able to remove the rest of the screw. The only plus from drilling out the screw heads is I had a good cover. I ordered a replacement shifter and ran into the same problems with the screws. This time I broke little chunks out of the phillips socket on the screws when I tried removing them. Since I have a good cover I literally just pried the cover off and used vise grips to remove the screws. I was extremely surprised at how much force it took to break the screws free with the vise grips. To be honest I was really surprised the threads didn’t come out with the screws. If Shimano wants to torque dust cover screws this absurdly tight, they should at the very least use better quality screws and they really should be using socket head screws. Now for a trivial complaint. Although it is unnecessary if you have a newer Derailleur with a barrel adjuster the right shifter should still have a barrel adjuster for the shift cable. The right shifter has the locking nubs sticking out for the barrel adjuster so it looks wrong without one.
