Silca Ultimate Chain Stripper + Wax Prep Description:
The Silca Ultimate chain stripper + wax prep makes the daunting task of a waxed drivetrain much more accessible. Silca took the end result and worked backward to identify chemicals that drive out greases and oils and allow the wax to adhere to the chain's metal properly. The result was a chain cleaner that was designed to remove grease and oil as well as prime the chain for wax adhesion.
Features:
- Cleans chain in 10 minutes
- Improves wax treatment adhesion
- Biodegradable ingredients
- Made in the USA
Manufacturer's Instructions:
- Option 1: For hot-melt waxing a new, factory chain with SILCA Secret Blend Hot Melt, simply immerse the chain in the Stripper and agitate 30 seconds. Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes and agitate again for 30 seconds. Remove the chain from the Stripper and rinse with water and then drop the chain directly into the hot wax, the water will boil off within a few minutes and the chain will be fully waxed with up to 30% longer application life than a chain cleaned by traditional methods.
- Option 2: For drip-applied waxing of a new or nearly new chain with SILCA Super Secret without removing the chain from the bicycle. Apply 1 drop of SILCA Chain Stripper to each roller of the chain while backpedaling. Allow to soak for 5 minutes. Backpedal 10 revolutions of the crank to agitate cleaner and re-apply 1 drop per roller allowing to sit for 5 more minutes. Rinse with clean water while backpedaling at least 10 revolutions.

Silca Ultimate Chain Stripper + Wax Prep (16oz)
At first glance, seems like a pricy luxury. It's really only good for one thing, cleaning the factory sticky high friction goo off a brand new chain so you can lube it properly. Hot melt wax in my case, but even if you prefer EVO the clean chain won't have every lint ball and cat hair stick to it while installing.
But when you consider the cost of the 3-4 other solvents, cleaners, degreasers needed to do the same job, plus the effort of responsibly recycling stuff like dirty mineral spirits it makes sense. Cleaning 2 full 126 link Shimano Linksys chains for my recumbent took very little effort, much less time than the old school 3 chemical method, and the cost of a coffee filter in a funnel to reclaim, I figure I'll be far ahead when the stuff finally gets used up in another half dozen new chains. Non toxic and biodegradable, there's no worries about storage.
I also was amused by the Silca Q&A video where the answer to "Can I use it to clean my Chainrings etc.?" was basically, "sure, but it's expensive and other stuff works better on dirty oily stuff" & "Yes, It's nontoxic and foodsafe, but it's an industrial grade solvent, I hope it's a joke to ask if you can eat it!" with the first comment on Youtube is " Can you make a vanilla flavoured version of it?".......
