The Grifter is Maxxis's most popular freestyle tire, and for good reason. The tread pattern rolls fast to help you keep your momentum and the high-volume casing softens landings. The Grifter is available in a variety of sizes for BMX and urban assault.

The most important part of a tire is arguably the rubber compound used to within the tread and with Maxxis' Single Compound you get one compound that offers low rolling resistance and excellent durability.

Maxxis Grifter Street Tire (Black) (Wire) (29") (2.5") (Single Compound)
Pros: Light weight
Cons: Poor traction, paper thin sidewalls

I'm a long time Hookworm user. I tried a set of Grifters thinking it may be a light weight alternative to the very heavy Hookworm. I didn't expect to get multiple seasons out of the Grifters but I thought I'd at least make it through summer. 28 miles later and I tore a huge hole in the sidewall. I didn't crash, I wasn't doing anything crazy. I was going down a rocky path that I've ridden on hookworms a hundred times. One time on Grifters and I left a huge puddle of sealant and had to walk home.
Thin sidewalls aside, they also do not grip nearly as well as hookworms. Its very easy to get the grifter to slip on flat solid surfaces like rock faces. Situations where the hookworm stays glued, the grifter will not.
It is a very light tire and that is definitely a plus. It's much easier to hop the bike up on to objects when theres 1.5 lbs less tire on the bike. But that weight savings doesn't really mean much when you're walking home.

So if you are looking for a "street" style tire that can take some abuse, this is NOT the right tire for you.
